Waiting Bench and Wheelchair Outside Of Doctor's Room

What we know

Study after study illustrates the links between obesity and past abuse, shame or trauma, while research shows us that child abuse and neglect are the biggest and most preventable causes of mental illness.

The link between mental health and obesity is clear. The connections between obesity and chronic diseases – like (pre) diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnoea – are well understood.

It’s time to go beyond the surface of obesity, to tackle these root causes.

How we can help

We will support people in making changes to their lifestyle – for healthy weight management.

There are the simple steps that we’ve taken – like the introduction of ‘wellness libraries’, which include books on healthy diets, ’good’ sugar vs. ‘bad’ sugar and stress reduction; and some practices that have also become ‘Parkrun practices’ – encouraging both patients and staff to take part in local park runs.

Then there are the more complex challenges – such as complex psychological needs and educating patients on white/processed carbohydrates – a staple of the majority of diets, but that have ZERO nutritional value.
